Steve Carlson hosts 'Slapshot Movie Tour Challenge' as a thank you to Johnstown community

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It's been 45 years since the hockey-themed, world-famous Slapshot movie was filmed in Downtown Johnstown. The First Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial was the prime location for the movie's countless goals, fights, and laughs. "They wanted to get actors to do our roles, but they couldn't skate well enough." That's what Steve Carlson told 6 News in a one-on-one interview -- at the Johnstown Amtrak Train Station -- where the Hanson Brothers made their film debut.

All state prisons on lockdown after staffers repeatedly fall ill

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said all state correctional institutions are locked down indefinitely after more than two dozen staff members fell ill to unknown substances over the past month. In addition to the lockdown, all DOC mailrooms will be closed to nonlegal mail until further notice, all DOC personnel must use protective equipment, training will take place at all facilities and all visits are suspended until the lockdown is lifted.

Johnstown Panera Bread cited for 'fly infestation'

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — Johnstown's Panera Bread, located in the Richland Town Center, has been cited by a state health inspector for a reported "fly infestation," according to a report on pafoodsafety.gov. The follow-up inspection was conducted on Friday as the inspector provided the following comments: This is a follow up inspection of a limited service retail food facility due to a fruit or drain fly infestation on the inspection of 1-29-20.

Local doctor urges residents to keep up with health, as COVID pushes routines aside

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It was this month last year when health concerns started revolving around COVID-19. That means, in many cases, those routine appointments, screenings, and surgeries took a back seat. Dr. Travis Rearick, a family physician with East Hills Primary Care, said as more appointments are delayed and cancelled, more problems could go undetected. "Some cancers don't quite wait for COVID to be over," he said. "I remember calling every single person -- and having our staff call every single person -- on the schedule to see if we could postpone their visit one month or two months.

Man gets life behind bars for murder of 16-year-old Harrisburg boy

Harrisburg, PA — A Harrisburg man will spend the rest of his life behind bars following his guilty plea to first degree murder of a teen boy in Harrisburg. Orlando Duarte waived his right to formal arraignment and pleaded guilty to murder of the first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a firearm during a declared state of emergency, and corruption of minors.
