Half a century ago, in June of 1972, Hurricane Agnes caused significant and widespread damage throughout the Mid-Atlantic, including here in our area. 50 years ago this week, Hurricane Agnes moved onshore over the Florida panhandle before slowing down over Pennsylvania bringing record setting rainfall totals and destructive flooding.
On the afternoon of June 19, 1972, Hurricane Agnes made landfall along the Florida Panhandle. The storm then weakened to a tropical depression over the Carolinas, then re-intensified to a tropical storm by June 22nd.

Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — According to Jefferson County EMS Director Tracy Zents, firefighters from multiple northern counties have been battling a large forest fire for most of the afternoon.
Officials say the fire is located within the Allegheny National Forest, in the area of River Road in Belltown.
Authorities say crews have been on scene since approximately 12:45 p.m.
Departments from Jefferson, Elk, Clarion, Clearfield and Forest county are all assisting.
NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein will remain locked up in New York as a court works out whether he should stay in a city jail while awaiting retrial, or be sent to California to serve his prison sentence for rape there.
The fallen movie mogul denied his consent for California's extradition request during a brief court hearing Thursday, and will remain behind bars in New York for now.
Weinstein, 72, was returned to the city's Riker's Island jail just days ago from a city hospital.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A Johnstown man convicted of shooting and killing a local high schooler over two years ago was sentenced to life in prison on Monday.
In February, a jury found Qwante Rose guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of 19-year-old Jaydin Sanderson on New Year's Day 2022.
Police say Sanderson's body was found inside a vehicle along Wood Street in the Hornerstown section of the city.
