JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (TND) — Missouri state Rep. Ben Baker, R-Neosho, said Friday his daughter and her husband were killed during a mission trip to Haiti.

Rep. Baker wrote in a Facebook post that Davy and Natalie Lloyd were both killed during an attack by a Haitian gang. The couple was working on behalf of Missions In Haiti, an Oklahoma-based Christian organization, which reports a third missionary named Jude was also killed during the ambush.

Missions In Haiti says the three missionaries were confronted by the gang while leaving a church. Davy, Natalie and Jude reportedly sought refuge in a nearby house and tried using a Starlink unit to call for help, but the gang members began firing rounds into the house. All three died of gunshot wounds, according to Missions In Haiti.

My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I’ve never felt this kind of pain," Rep. Baker wrote.

The killings come at Haiti continues to face widespread turmoil after gangs prevented Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry from returning to the country from a diplomatic trip in March. Henry was forced to resign, and the Transitional Presidential Council assumed governance of the country. Gangs still control much of the nation's territory.

Rep. Baker received an outpouring of support and prayers on social media Friday.

"Devastated. It’s moments like this that only the comfort and grace of God can sustain and make sense of the loss. Please pray," Missouri state Rep. Doug Richey, R-Excelsior Springs, wrote on social media.

"Friends, I know Rep. Ben Baker of Missouri personally," Jason Rapert, chairman of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers, said. "I ask you to please pray for his family and the Lloyd family as they cope with the devastating news that his daughter and son-in-law were killed in Haiti."
