A Harrisburg man will spend the rest of his life behind bars following his guilty plea to first degree murder of a teen boy in Harrisburg.

Orlando Duarte waived his right to formal arraignment and pleaded guilty to murder of the first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a firearm during a declared state of emergency, and corruption of minors.

Judge Richard A. Lewis sentenced Duarte to life in jail and a consecutive 12.5 to 25 years of prison on the other charges.

The charges relate to the August 29, 2020, murder of Kyan King in the 1800 block of Forster Street in the City of Harrisburg.

During the investigation, District Attorney Fran Chardo described the moments before Kyan was shot, as witnesses tried to help.

"He was naked the citizen tried to cover him with a towel and the boy reported he had been raped and the man that raped him was trying to kill him," Chardo says.

Adding Duarte showed up moments later armed with a gun.

"Duarte chased him down the boy fell to the ground and Duarte fired two shots into him on the ground," Chardo said. "Those wounds ultimately causing his death."

Legally, Duarte was not permitted to own a firearm because of his record. He is a register sex offender in the Megan's Law Database. He was arrested two blocks away from the shooting scene.

Kyan King's family attended the sentencing hearing and supported the disposition.
