CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Farmers and others in agriculture-related industries are lobbying for a state veterinary lab to be set up in western Pennsylvania.
The state has three animal testing labs, including one at Penn State, which are vital in providing quick testing services during an outbreak of potentially dangerous diseases, such as avian flu.
The labs also provide training and employment opportunities, but the other two labs in Pennsylvania are east of Penn State, and the state's Secretary of Agriculture says western Pennsylvania farmers deserve better, and quicker access to testing services.
Governor Shapiro is also proposing a five million dollar allocation for a western Pennsylvania animal diagnostic laboratory.
