'He's got a gun!' Tennessee student jokes. Now, he's barred from prom, graduation

GRUNDY COUNTY, Tenn. — 'Gus has got a gun!' It wasn't true. But those five words now have a high school senior in hot water in Grundy County, Tennessee. The family of James Morgan Sitz says other students goaded Sitz into saying those words while on school grounds, and says he was only joking. But school officials determined it was no laughing matter. Sitz was suspended from Grundy County High School for the rest of the year, and he won't be able to attend that school's prom or graduation ceremonies.

Police charge 2 Somerset adults with providing drugs to children and teens

SOMERSET - Somerset state police are investigating an incident after they said they caught two adults providing drugs to children and teens in the borough. Police said Jennifer Coughenour, 28, of Somerset, and Ryan Williams, 27, of Somerset, were found in a children's playhouse in the woods near Roof Garden Mobile Home Park in Somerset Township supplying marijuana to four children. Over 100 residents displaced after large fire in Huntingdon

St. Francis Caring and Sharing store celebrates grand opening

Investigators say Neal Hubish, 43, was accused of fatally stabbing his father, Arthur, and his aunt, Maria Puskarich, in November of 2021. On Tuesday, officials say Hubish appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder and simple assault. Authorities say he will serve an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole, as well as an additional 1 to 2 years on the assault charge.

Bishop Carroll teacher unlawfully touched 2 students on Harrisburg field trip

(WJAC) — A Cambria County teacher is facing a slew of charges after police said he inappropriately touched two 15-year-old female students on a class field trip to the state Capitol in March, according to a criminal complaint. According to court documents, 68-year-old James Luksik, a teacher at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, is facing three felonies, including sexual contact with a student, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.

BNSF Railway contributed to 2 deaths in Montana where asbestos sickened thousands: jury

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A federal jury on Monday said BNSF Railway contributed to the deaths of two people who were exposed to asbestos decades ago when tainted mining material was shipped through a Montana town where thousands have been sickened. The jury awarded $4 million each in compensatory damages to the estates of the two plaintiffs, who died in 2020. Jurors said asbestos that spilled in the rail yard in the town of Libby, Montana was a substantial factor in the plaintiffs’ illnesses and death.

Man fired four shots at juvenile during 'emergency situation' in Portage, PSP says

Police say the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Cody Anderson, had reportedly barricaded himself inside the home following an altercation with the juvenile victim.

St. Marys City Council rejects proposed mobile methadone clinic; legal appeal possible

Council voted 4-3 against bringing a mobile methadone clinic that would have been operated by Discovery House CU, LLC. Council member Shane Schneider voted in favor of the clinic. He said Discovery House officials presented evidence as to why the clinic should be allowed to operate in the city.

Former college student pleads guilty to deadly sword attack

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A former University of Connecticut student pleaded guilty to murder and other charges Wednesday for killing a man and severely wounding another with a sword in 2020 — one of two deadly attacks that led to a six-day manhunt in several states that ended with his capture in Maryland. Peter Manfredonia, 26, from Newtown, Connecticut, agreed to a 55-year prison sentence during a hearing at Rockville Superior Court.

Dozens gathered at the Alabaster House Church to hold a vigil for Lt. James Wagner, who is in critical condition after a shooting in Mifflintown, Juniata County. Crews from multiple counties battling large forest fire in Jefferson County

Man convicted of killing local high schooler on New Year's Day gets life in prison

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A Johnstown man convicted of shooting and killing a local high schooler over two years ago was sentenced to life in prison on Monday. In February, a jury found Qwante Rose guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of 19-year-old Jaydin Sanderson on New Year's Day 2022. Police say Sanderson's body was found inside a vehicle along Wood Street in the Hornerstown section of the city.

State witnesses challenge defense's expert testimony

WASHINGTON (TND) — The prosecution in Alex Murdaugh's double murder trial called six witnesses to the stand Tuesday in its rebuttal of the defense's case as the trial stretched into its 26th day. 14-year-old turns himself in for Southeast DC shooting that injured 16-year-old

(7News) — A 14-year-old from Southeast D.C. turned himself in Sunday for a shooting in April thatleft a 16-year-old injured, according to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials. Having a damaged or otherwise illegible license plate could potentially land you in some trouble, According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, a vehicle registration plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration, or loss of reflectivity. The plate needs to be replaced once it’s illegible. 2 people wanted on arrest warrants in Cambria County apprehended

JOHNSTOWN – Two people being sought on arrest warrants in Cambria County were apprehended Wednesday by members of the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force. Officials said Blaine Vincent Jackson, 40, and Melissa A. Coleman, 42, were taken into custody in the 2700 block of Mosside Boulevard in Monroeville, Allegheny County. Auburn running back Brian Battie has been hospitalized following a weekend shooting in Florida, where his brother was killed and three others were hurt. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a strip mall at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, finding a large crowd and multiple people who were shot in the parking lot. The office said in a statement that Tommie L. Battie IV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Those special circumstances mean Dino Rojas-Moreno, 26, would be eligible for the death penalty if he’s convicted. He’s accused of approaching 27-year-old Tatum Goodwin at around 1 a.m. last Sunday, Nov. 12, in a parking lot in Laguna Beach, Orange County.

DUBOIS, Pa. (WJAC) — A state trooper assigned to Troop C in DuBois has died. According to the Fraternal Order of Police, Trooper Monty Mitchell was returning to the barracks Monday after advising he was not feeling well. While backing a vehicle into a parking spot, he suffered a medical episode. Members provided life saving measures, but Mitchell was later pronounced dead at Penn Highlands Hospital. The post says Mitchell was 45-years-old and had enlisted with the Pennsylvania State Police in 2007.

Hanging Gardens LLC purchases Johnstown property, hopes to create up to 300 jobs

Art comes to life as Shanksville Elementary students' drawings turned to stuffed animals

Cameron County COVID cases remain low as virus surges across PA

(TND) — Americans' household debt continued its steady increase in the first quarter, hitting a new high of $17.69 trillion. Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s report Tuesday also showed credit card balances decreased by $14 billion to $1.12 trillion. Still, credit card balances typically fall from the fourth quarter of one year to the first quarter of the next, and card balances this time around remained about 13% higher than they were a year ago.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police say a man and woman in Bedford County are both facing child abuse-related charges after a 1-year-old was treated for facial and abdominal injuries earlier this year. Investigators say on March 9th, troopers were contacted by staff at UPMC Altoona after a female toddler was brought to the emergency room and treated for "bruising and petechiae" to her face and abdomen. Police say hospital staff also discovered scratches to the child's face and body and expressed concerns that the toddler was being abused.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The 10-year-old son of a Kansas state lawmaker died while riding a waterslide that's billed as the world's largest, according to officials and the boy's family. Unseasonably mild temperatures mean no penguin parade at zoo

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Unseasonably mild temperatures are stopping penguins from parading around the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium as planned. The zoo's "Penguins on Parade" event usually kicks off each year at the start of December. But temperatures in the area reached into the mid-50s on Saturday and were expected to hit the mid-60s on Sunday, so officials delayed the launch until Dec. 8. Clearfield County's child agency stressed from staffing issues, lack of facilities

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center 'disappointed' by outcomes of PHC4 report

JOHNSTOWN -- A report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council rates 16 categories of ailments, and the mortality rates from reported cases of those ailments. Nursing and Personal care homes reach "critical" point amid more closures

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Finding personal care for a loved one can be hard enough. That process became increasingly more difficult following the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association says more than 230 personal care homes have closed across the state since the pandemic began. M. Veil Griffith, an administrator with the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging says, "It boils down to a financial problem." MANHEIM, Pa. (AP) — Police say a man was found in the trunk of a car that arrived to be sold at a Pennsylvania auto auction. Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Chief David Steffen said the man is being treated at a hospital and is expected to be released. He isn't identifying the man or the nature of the treatment or his injuries. Workers who were inspecting the vehicle found the man Thursday at the massive Manheim Auto Auction facility, about 90 miles (130 kilometers) west of Philadelphia.

Philipsburg man accused of child abuse after toddler found 'face down' in bathtub

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say a Philipsburg man is behind bars following an investigation into suspected child abuse over the weekend. Investigators say on Saturday, Feb. 11, troopers were dispatched to a residence in Chester Hill Borough for a report of a 1-year-old child who was found "face down" in a bathtub. Police say the child reportedly had numerous bruises on his body and he was flown to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for further treatment.

Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wisconsin, and the nonprofit World War II historical preservation group Pacific Wrecks announced in March they were launching a joint search for Bong's Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter. Suspected shoplifter made 4 trips into store in 3 days and was arrested twice

This happened at a Lowe's home improvement store in Florida. The officer arrived last Monday, May 6, but the theft happened two weeks before that, on April 22. SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police have determined the causes of death of a 40-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son who plunged from the third level of San Diego’s Petco Park, just as thousands of baseball fans were heading inside for a Padres game last year. Raquel Wilkins’ death on Sept. 25, 2021, has been classified as a suicide, and her son Denzel Browning-Wilkins’ death has been classified as a homicide, the San Diego Police Department said in a statement Wednesday.

Doom room fire spurs evacuations but no injuries

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) -- A dorm room fire at a Pennsylvania college spurred an evacuation but caused no injuries. Authorities say a vape stick apparently sparked the fire in Wallwork Hall on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It started shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday but was quickly doused by a sprinkler system in the room before firefighters arrived. Officials say the blaze started in the corner of a bed and appeared to be caused by the vape stick.

Johnstown man accused of raping woman in basement of Cambria Co. apartment

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County say a Johnstown man is jailed following an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in the basement of a local apartment. Police say in late April, officers with the Stonycreek Township police department were contacted to investigate an alleged sexual assault at an apartment building along Emilio Street. Investigators say the victim told police that she reportedly met the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Raemil Morris, on Facebook.

California high school student battling cancer walks with graduating class

REEDLEY, Calif. (KMPH) — It's graduation season, and one graduate overcame the odds to be at his high school commencement on Thursday. Two years ago, Malachi Rios was diagnosed with stage four testicular cancer that spread to his lungs. After fighting the cancer for a year and a half, the Reedley High School senior was able to walk at his graduation. He played for the Reedley Football team his junior year but stopped playing two games into his senior season to start chemotherapy in San Francisco.

Centre Hall man stabbed, killed his dog while under the influence of mushrooms, police say

A 41-year-old Centre Hall man has been charged with stabbing and killing his dog Saturday night while he was on drugs. Just before 8 p.m. state police responded to a report of a man running on East Main Street in Miles Township with a dog. According to a probable-cause affidavit, Robert Noah Lewis was high on mushrooms and had stabbed his America Bulldog, Axel, multiple times with a knife. When on scene, first responders saw Lewis running “wildly” with the knife before he had an apparent medical emergency, according to the affidavit.

All state prisons on lockdown after staffers repeatedly fall ill

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said all state correctional institutions are locked down indefinitely after more than two dozen staff members fell ill to unknown substances over the past month. Woman charged for death of abandoned dog and puppies in Berks County, police say

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A woman is now being charged for possibly causing the death of a dog and her litter of puppies, police say. Juvenile suspect sought in Erie school shooting turns self in

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a juvenile suspect being sought in a shooting that injured another student inside a northwestern Pennsylvania high school has turned himself in to police. Salisbury woman accused of burning cigarettes on young boy

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County say a Salisbury woman is facing charges, accused of burning cigarettes on the skin of a young boy. According to the affidavit, troopers were contacted in February to investigate a CYS complaint regarding burn marks on the finger and neck of a 5-year-old boy. Upon further investigation, authorities questioned 66-year-old Miriam Housel, who claimed that the marks were "birthmarks." Police say doctors at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh concluded that the marks were not consistent with any accidental injuries and were left intentionally.

Whitewater park at Greenhouse closed while engineers work 'to reduce risk'

CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The water rapids area of Greenhouse Park in Somerset County is closed until at least next Tuesday as engineers decide how to make a section of the man-made whitewater feature safer. University Park, PA (WJAC) — A newly released financial report from the Penn State Athletic Department shows "record numbers" for both revenue and spending for Nittany Lion athletics. Football generated over half that amount, at almost $110 million in revenue. Somerset County recycling program suspended, officials work to find new model

OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. (WPMI) — One day after after Michael Stadther reported his ice cream truck missing and posted it on Facebook, the truck has been found. "Facebook found my truck," Stadther said. "I can't believe how many people shared it and knew about it." His original post about the truck was shared over 500 times and was also shared by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Stadther told NBC 15 that as soon as he found it was stolen from his lot in Okaloosa Island, he contacted police and put it on Facebook for help.

Portland State University police chief hospitalized amid campus protest arrests

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A Portland State University spokesperson has confirmed Portland State University’s Chief of Campus Police Willie Halliburton suffered a medical emergency while responding to more protests on campus Thursday. Campus Public Safety officers arrested seven people related to the protest, three of those individuals were PSU students. Portland Police Bureau was also onsite and provided support. Halliburton was transported to the hospital and admitted. According to the Portland Police Bureau, the day of the incident PPB had formed a line for all PSU officers to make arrests, but the crowd allegedly became hostile and surrounded the officers.

Judge dismisses charges against Westmont grad accused of killing IUP frat brother

INDIANA - A Westmont Hilltop graduate accused of homicide in the death of his fraternity brother at IUP had all charges dismissed. According to a court order, charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault were dismissed against 19-year-old Brady Distefano. Distefano's attorney, Tom Dickey, argued that there was insufficient evidence to have the charges go to trial and a judge agreed. Distefano was initially charged in February after police said that he and Caleb Zweig, 20, got into a fight.

PA man acquitted of murder, endangering in 2018 death of 2-year-old boy

YORK, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man has been acquitted in the death of a friend’s toddler son more than four years ago. Jurors in York County Court deliberated for about two hours Friday before acquitting 43-year-old Tyree Bowie of first- and third-degree murder as well as child endangerment in the September 2018 death of 2-year-old Dante Mullinix. Woman pleads guilty to causing death by sitting on boyfriend

Johnstown's Central Park could be impacted by downtown improvements

Ex-Johnstown officer and convicted killer, Craig Knepper, reportedly granted parole

Cambria County, PA — A former Johnstown police officer, and current murder convict, Craig Knepper, is reportedly going to be out on parole, according to the family of the victim, Susan Burkhart/Fyock. Knepper pled guilty on Christmas Eve 2002 to avoid a life sentence. In June of that year, police say Knepper got into an argument with Fyock. They say he ended up shooting Fyock once in the leg, and once in the head, killing her.

Police say a motorcycle operated by 77-year-old John Weber crossed into the opposite lane and collided with another vehicle. Spring Mills man accused of repeatedly abusing young girl over period of 5+ years

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Spring Mills man is behind bars following an investigation into allegations that he repeatedly sexually abused a young girl over a five-year period. According to the affidavit, police were first contacted in January of 2023, by the victim's mother, after the victim reportedly disclosed that she had been repeatedly abused by 35-year-old Vladimir Slavskiy. Police say the victim told investigators that the alleged abuse began in 2017, when she was approximately 7 or 8 years old.
