When Governor Josh Shapiro was running for election he made many commitments, one of them being that he would implement automatic voter registration - and he's done just that.
Channel 6 spoke with the Secretary of the Commonwealth about this and he says this makes it easer to register to vote.
“Applicants who interact at a PennDOT center location will be prompted to register to vote,” said Al Schmidt, the Secretary for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “They have the opportunity to opt out if they choose for one reason or another.”
Schmidt tells 6 News he is glad the Shapiro administration implemented automatic voter registration.
“I think you’re always looking to improve elections. Especially to improve voter access and to improve election integrity,” Schmidt added. “One extraordinary thing about this is that it does make it easier to vote and improves the accuracy of the voter rolls.”
A press release about the Change States in part, “Pennsylvania joins a group of 23 states with leaders from both parties – including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, Virginia, and West Virginia who have taken this step to promote election security and save taxpayers time and money.”
Schmidt tells Channel 6, “It has an accuracy benefit to it and it has an election integrity benefit to it as well.”
Schmidt says now if you go to the D.M.V to, “Change your address or you change your name or you go to a D.M.V where you have a drivers license, but your currently not registered you would interface with this automatic voter registration system. There a lot of people who recommended this change for a long time and I’m glad the Shapiro administration has brought it about.”
